..... that Canada boasts the first black female editor on the North American Continent.  Mary Ann Shadd Cary was a firm believer in equal rights.  She accomplished plenty in her life:  a teacher, a newspaper editor, an army recruiter and at the age of 61 she became a practicing lawyer.
......that Osborne Perry Anderson, Chatham resident, was one of only two survivors of John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, Virginia in 1859.  His book, "A Voice From Harper's Ferry" is a first hand account of that battle.

......that after graduating from Oberlin College, James Monroe Jones called Chatham home.  A skilled Gunsmith and Engraver his guns won competitions as far away as Montreal.  A brilliant man, he spoke several languages.

...that black businesses flourished in Chatham in the 1850's and 60's.  Stanton Hunton, pictured here, owned the Hunton Block.  James Charity, Grandison Boyd and Nathaniel Murray also owned buildings in Chatham that housed black businesses.
