SNJM Justice and Peace Network

Sisters, lay associates and friends from Canada, the United States, Brazil, Haiti, Lesotho and Peru are united in this network of education and action. Representatives meet once a year face to face, and six times during the year via conference calls to work together on issues.

We are also connected for education and action with two non-governmental organizations (NGOs): Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) begun by the Canadian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, and Franciscans International in the United States. This connection enables our network to lobby and act with an even stronger voice for justice.

Each representative group educates on their own issues, such as the elections in Lesotho, migrant worker issues in California, and the School of the Americas in the United States. We join in actions as much as is feasible to work together on these issues. We also work together on issues that involve all of us, such as the World Trade Organization and the World Bank domination of the economies of poor countries, and sweatshop production for North American markets.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Lobby your government representatives for improvement to the social safety net for women and children (welfare, health care, childcare, shelters and assistance programs that fight poverty and abuse).

Support community groups that offer assistance and shelter for women and children with your financial aid, walkathons, fundraisers and contributions of goods and time.
