Formal Education
Sisters of the Holy Names have been involved in education in the Windsor-Detroit area since 1864. Local elementary schools benefited from the teaching skills and the direction of sisters for over one hundred years. High Schools, such as St Mary’s Academy in Windsor, St Rose in Amherstburg, and St Joseph in River Canard were under the direction of the Holy Names for many years. When the last of these schools, St Mary’s, closed its doors 12 sisters went to teach at Assumption High School. The 500 girls who had been in attendance at St Mary’s also transferred to Assumption. The Basilian Fathers who were administrators at Assumption were welcoming of the Sisters and girls who made Assumption their new home. Holy Names High School, which opened in Windsor in 1985, also attracted several teaching Holy Names Sisters to the faculty. In the Windsor area there is still a Holy Names presence in elementary schools.
