A Special Tribute to Bertie
My Brave boy ~~ Bertie
We forged a bond in 1995,
When Bertie and Vickie brought me alive.
The bond grew deeper when he became ill,
with every shot and every pill.
He lived with me not yet six years,
So now I cry those scalding tears.
Diabetes — we'd conquered that and more,
But cancer darkened our lives and door.
Our bond is not broken, it never will be
For my Bertie waits at the Bridge for me.
Bertie (aka Albert) DonnyBrooke 5/22/95 - 7/30/01
When Bertie was three he was diagnosed with diabetes. Although
his twin sister, Vickie (Victoria) remained healthy, Bertie bravely
fought several bouts of pancreatitis. He never complained
about
his twice daily insulin shots, the eye drops that kept his cataracts
controlled, or even the surgery needed to repair the torn
anterior ligament in his right hind leg.
At 9 AM and 9 PM every day, I'd sing out, "It's time!" — and my
brave boy would come running. I would hold him while his daddy
gave him his shot. In July of his sixth year, Bertie suddenly
stopped eating or drinking, which is very unusual for a
diabetic. He was taken to our vet immediately. Ultrasound
discovered a tumor had taken over more than 90% of his pancreas.
Pancreatic cancer — so painful and so fatal.
That was an enemy neither we, nor Bertie, could best.
Surrounded by his loving family, Mommy, Daddy and sister Vickie,
Bertie went to the Rainbow Bridge to wait for us to be reunited.
I believe he is pain free, enjoying the company of our other
beloved fur babies. I know they have found the most beautifully
shaded spot, near the clearest, sweetest stream. My guardian
angels wait patiently, knowing some day we will be together
again to share once more the kisses we treasure so much.

The Rainbow Bridge
Just
this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially
close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are
meadows and hills for all of
our special friends so they can run and play
together. There is plenty of
food, water and sunshine and our friends are
warm and comfortable
All the animals who had been ill and
old are restored to health
and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are
made whole and strong
again, just as we remember them in our
dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals
are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each
miss someone very special, someone who
was left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one
suddenly stops and looks
into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his
eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group,
flying
over the green
grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when
you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous
reunion, never to be parted again. The
happy kisses rain upon
your face; your hands again caress the beloved
head,
and you look once more into those
trusting eyes,
so long gone from your life, but
never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.
