OTHER COOL JOIN HANDS PROJECTS!

The Trolls' Picnic

The Join Hands Puppeteers teamed up with the Windsor Symphony

to present a creepy comical interpretation of Dies Irae (Mass for the Dead) Opus 5 by Hector Berlioz.
Matthew and Margaret listened to the music and envisioned great lumbering Trolls, Papa, Mama and Baby, out on a pleasant graveyard picnic.

troll cast: Talaya Demarce, Matthew Romain, Katie Romain, Sean Yamana, Kaitlyn Dorion, John Burke, Margaret Atkinson The Troll's Picnic involved seven puppeteers, many of whom are high school students, dressed all in black, hooded and masked. Three puppeteers working a puppet often could not see each other, so their excellent tandem coordination was partly due to carefully listening for musical cues for their specific actions. A yawn for example involved a puppeteer strethching out an arm, a second puppeteer brought the other hand to the mouth, and the third puppeteer moved the body and mouth to compliment the other's manipulations, all at the same time, without being able to see each other.

Project Facilitator Misuzu Yamana, Katie Romain, and Margaret Atkinson begin production by weaving foam strips into an oversized picnic basket

The trolls were a hit with the audience, especially baby troll, who refused to eat any of the oversized food offered to her, but did all she could to get into the cookies intended for dessert. the finished troll picnic basket

BIZARRE PUPPET INVASION

The JHP Also produced and performed a puppet interpretation of Edvard Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King (Peer Gynt). This one was more abstract with the puppets actually entering from hiding places among the musicians in the orchestra. As the music builds, the bizarre creatures crawl, bounce and fly, pursuing each other, and finally turning on the conductor, John Morris Russell!

Learning Through the Arts

The JHP are involved in a big way in partnership with the Royal Conservatory of Music. The RCM's Learning Through the Arts program has them using their expertise in puppetry to bring dry curriculum to life.
