FLAT ROCK CHAMPS CROWNED FLAT ROCK, MI:
One of the largest crowds of the year filed into Flat Rock Speedway
Saturday night for the Joe Lake Tireman Season Championships. Rick Knowles,
Greg Studt, Ken Knight and Aram Zadigian all captured division titles,
while Steve Cronenwett, Randy Cronenwett, Knight, Greg Stilwell Jr. and
Jerry Eritano captured feature race wins. Fraza Forklifts of Detroit provided
bonus money to the winners.
The ARCA Allen Chevrolet-Cadillac/Cintas Late Model 50 lap championship
race went 43 laps straight as the pack battled for position. Knowles, on
the pole by virtue of his top spot in the points, bobbled coming down the
front straight on the first lap, allowing Steve Cronenwett to slip by for
the lead. Steve motored out front, with Ron Allen in tow. The lead duo
held their spots as Steve scored his 2nd win of the season at Flat Rock
over Allen, Tim Hebert, Royce Cornett, Steve Bunge, Dennis Strickland,
Rick Knowles, Robbie Loving, Ken Ahlgren and Dan Ford Jr. Allen set the
Harwood Pontiac/Buick pole time at 11:498. Strickland, Ford Jr. and Chris
Benson took the heats. Knowles’ finish was enough to grab his 4th consecutive
title, a feat only accomplished by the legendary Joy Fair. Strickland’s
performance netted him the over-all points title of Flat Rock and Toledo,
which gives him a $4000 bonus from Allen Chevrolet and Cintas.
Randy Cronenwett did what he had to do, winning the 25 lap ARCA Auto
Value Parts Stores/Borg Warner Figure 8 championship feature, but Greg
Studt’s 4th place finish netted him the Flat Rock championship and the
over-all Flat Rock/Toledo point title. Randy was followed by Ricky Kargel,
Dennis Whisman, Studt, Ken Ahlgren, Eric Buck, Dan Apperson, Rich Lee,
Parker Wade and Craig Pace. Kargel and Studt won the heats. In the 20 lap
make-up feature from August 18, Apperson took his 2nd win of 2001 over
Studt, Whisman, Kargel, Cronenwett, Troy Herrmann, Buck, Wade, Robbie Loving
and Billy Earley.
A joyous Ken Knight secured his first-ever championship in style by
winning the 25 lap Joe Lake Tireman championship feature, leading every
circuit. Knight charged to the big win over Randy
Casey, Brian Norton, Terry Humphrey, Ron Allen, Randy DeMaggio,
Terry Lilley, Dave Tanner, Chuck Koob and Tony Ortega. Humphrey set quick
time at 13:238, with the dash to Knight.
The B dash went to Rob Murphy. DeMaggio, Jarod MacZink, Aram Zadigian,
Rich Abel and Jerry Eritano won the heat races. The 20 lap B Main went
to first-time winner Greg Stilwell Jr. over James Rae, Lonnie York, Larry
Smouthers Jr. and Rob Murphy. Eritano took the C main over Chris Fitzpatrick.
In the make-up B Main, Steve Lilley nipped Mel Worley by inches to win
his first feature. Bob Swanson, MacZink and Bob Rae followed. Henry Bradley
bested his son Nick in the make-up C Main.
