The Web is less than perfect

As I said on the welcome page, this is my personal page on MNSi.net in Windsor. MNSi is a dial up ISP that allows its clients to host a 2Mb web page. There is no personal CGI bin. Basically it is just a small static web site.

Access to MNSi has been quite good during the year I have been with them. Transmission slows down in the evenings sometimes, but then nothing is perfect. I have two modems connecting me to the Internet. A 56K dial-up modem and a cable modem.

The 56K modem has never connected at any speed above 48K. This is due to bad telephone lines. The problem is not at MNSi's end or my end. I spent sometime checking this out and it's the phone company's fault.

After many months of of delays Cogeco@Home.com managed to connected me on December 30th 1999. So far the service has been pretty disastrous. The connection often drops. The Ethernet adapter card is rated at 10Mbps, but I have never seen a down load speed greater than 25Kb, and their billing has been out to lunch. If you join any of the "athome" news group you will find it filled with complaints of poor service. To be fair to @Home, they are experiencing unprecedented growth and do seem to be actively working on the problems.

There is supposed to be a 5Mb web page available but I haven't been able to get at it yet. Even if I could, I doubt I would use it till the service improves. Unfortunately @Home is the only economic fast connection to the web so I'm locked in.

It is now 2005 and MNSi now has ASDL connections and a 20MB web page for each subscriber. I use a whole MB. I have a counter on my index.html page. It suggests that it has had 7,000 hits over the last 4 years, about 4 hits a day. I suspect that this is badly skewed with half the hits being in the last year. Some will be from my link-checker program.
