DHA

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)

Fats make up sixty percent of the brain and the nerves that run every system in the body. So, it stands to reason that the better the fat in the diet, the better the brain. So, with all the fat eaten by the average American, why don't we have more geniuses in this country? The average American brain is getting enough fat, but it's not getting the right kind of fat.

DHA is an important buiding block of brain and eye retina.

In a study of more than 1,000 people (average age 75), those with high blood levels of DHA were more than 40% less likely to develop dementia (including Alzheimer's) over the next nine years than people with low DHA levels. In cases where dementia has already set in, and DHA levels are increased, the patients symptoms improved. Data also shows that as DHA levels in the brain decrease, there is a corresponding increase in memory loss.

DHEA & MELATONIN

I propose melatonin is directly involved in DHEA production. This may be the mechanism of significant increases in brain size found in northern hominids. These two hormones are directly linked to each other in the sleep- wake cycle; one affects production of the other during this cycle. DHEA is used during the day to activate consciousness and is literally "used up." We get tired at the end of the day. This loss of DHEA stimulation allows the pineal gland to release melatonin, synthesized earlier. This large release of melatonin starts the first slow wave sleep of the night. Melatonin triggers this sleep by slowing release of prolactin, which is known to specifically stimulate DHEAS.

DHEA article by James South.

In his recent book The Anti-Aging Zone, (12) B. Sears declared age-related increases in insulin levels/insulin resistance to be the chief "pillar of aging." Similarly, Dilman and Dean in their masterpiece The Neuroendocrine Theory of Aging and Degenerative Disease also consider age-related derangements of insulin /glucose metabolism to be a chief culprit of aging and degenerative disease. (13) A growing body of evidence indicates DHEA has a significant role to play in reducing age-related increases in insulin levels, insulin resistance, and blood glucose.

DHEA is quite possibly the single greatest advancement made in the area of human biochemistry and health preventative medicine

Chromium

Chromium’s function in our bodies is critical; without it, the hormone insulin would not work. Most people are familiar with insulin as the shot diabetics give themselves in order to control their high blood sugar. But, what most people don’t realize is that insulin is the "master hormone"of our metabolism; it not only controls blood sugar levels and many other aspects of carbohydrate breakdown and storage, but also directs much of the metabolism involving fat, protein and energy (calories).

Chromium - Nutrition

In an article published by the American Institute of Nutrition, Walter Mertz found that interventions of chromium supplementation significantly improved the efficiency of insulin and/or blood lipid profiles for the participants in 80% of the cases reviewed.

Potassium

Potassium is an extremely important electrolyte that functions in the maintenance of:
Water balance and distribution
Acid-base balance
Muscle and nerve cell function
Heart function
Kidney and adrenal function

Facts About Vitamin B12

Health care professionals may advise adults over the age of 50 to get their vitamin B12 from a dietary supplement or from foods fortified with vitamin B12 because 10 to 30 percent of older people may be unable to absorb vitamin B12 in food

Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)

Vitamin B12 is an especially important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve cells and it aids in the production of DNA and RNA, the body's genetic material. Vitamin B12 also works closely together with vitamin B9 (folate) to regulate the formation of red blood cells and to help iron function better in the body. The synthesis of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), a compound involved in immune function and mood, depends on the participation of folate and vitamin B12.

Ginseng Supplements and Exercise

It has been suggested that ginseng can increase long-term resistance to stress and disease and therefore affect the lifespan.

Glucosamine Sulfate Chondroitin Sulfate

These two compounds have gained widespread use for the treatment of arthritic conditions. Though initially skeptical of "homeopathic" natural remedies, our patients have swayed our thinking by reporting excellent symptomatic relief, comparable to any non-steroidal (NSAID) drug.

Copper (Cu) is a trace element that is essential for most animals, including humans. The influence of copper upon human health is due to the fact it is part of enzymes, which are proteins that help biochemical reactions occur in every cell. Copper is involved in the absorption, storage and metabolism of iron. The symptoms of a copper deficiency are similar to iron deficiency anemia.

Nutritional Supplements - Anti Aging

Once you have taken steps to meet your bodies basic nutritional needs, it's time to look at specific supplements and foods which will further enhance your ability to heal, recover and retard the aging process. Some folks may feel that taking a basic multi-vitamin/mineral formula covers them. While there are some high quality, food concentrate derived multi formulas available, they just scratch the surface of what you can do for your body to overcome injuries and age related infirmities. With that in mind, I will list some of the specific supplements I take, and why

Aging & Its Problems

Among humans, the effects of aging vary from one individual to another. The average life expectancy for Americans is around 75 years, almost twice what it was in the early 1900s. Although some people never reach this age, and others are beset with illnesses if they do, more and more people are living healthy lives well into their 90s and older. The study of the different aging processes that occur among individuals and the factors that cause these changes is known as gerontology. Geriatrics is a medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases in the elderly.

Living Close to Nature May Help You Live Longer

Want to live longer? It’s as simple as living on a tree-lined street or near a park, according to a recent study of over 3,000 people in Tokyo.

MELATONIN

Pierpaoli and Regelson are two leading scientists in senescence research, generally known as "the process of ageing", and endocrinology, the science dealing with the endocrine glands. Already at an early stage they hit upon the hormone "melatonin", produced by the pineal gland in the brain. They soon recognised the significance of this substance - which at that time was relatively unknown - and the organ producing it. For more than thirty years, in an exhaustive series of tests using mice and rats, they investigated the effects of this hormone on the organism. The astonishing results of their research - the effects of melatonin on the system of endocrine glands as a whole, and the immune system in particular - were the subject of many scientific papers published by these two scientists over the years.

Royal Jelly and The Ageing Process

Lamberti and Cornejo have documented important elements in royal jelly that can help slow the ageing process. It just may be that we are close to discovering a factual basis for all those stories of rejuvenation and longevity. Here's what the scientist say about gamma globulin: "Gamma globulin is of incalculable value to the living body. Gamma globulin is the most important component of the proteins that work internally in the fight against bacteria, viruses, and toxins".

The Natural Way To Better Health

Human beings have the genetic capability to live for a healthy 120 years. So why are we robbing ourselves of a considerable portion of our naturally endowed potential? With a sensible eating and exercise routine, you can protect your health well into old age.

Clues to Living Past 100 in Good Health

A study compared the health of 176 children of centenarians over a period of 10 to 15 years with that of children whose parents lived to the average life expectancy of 73 years. While no difference was found between the groups for depression, lung disease and other health aspects unrelated to heart disease, the centenarian children had a 66 percent reduced risk of high blood pressure, a 64 percent lower risk of heart disease, and a 59 percent reduced risk of diabetes. Researchers say that these results may suggest a link specifically between heart disease and longevity. Additionally, children of centenarians also took fewer medications, weighed less and had lower body mass indexes (BMI), a measure of obesity.

Testosterone Boosts Mental Abilities in Aging Men

Older men with relatively high levels of testosterone in their blood tend to outperform others in tests of memory and other aspects of mental functioning, according to new study findings.

Mitochodria Key to Life Extension

Research conducted recently at the University of California, and confirmed by numerous studies at major universities throughout the world, has shown that the most important factor in aging is the decay of the mitochondria - the organelles within the cell that convert amino acids, fatty acids and sugars into energy. Research performed by the University Of California scientists and others has demonstrated that as we age, the efficiency of the mitochondria diminishes, as does their quantity per cell.

Caloric Restriction The Anti-Aging Diet

Calorie restriction, as it is used by life-extensionists, means a reduction in caloric-intake for the purposes of lowering one's rate of aging as well as preventing disease or the morbidity/mortality associated with disease.

Fitness Level Found Vital in Men's Death Risk

The fittest may indeed survive the longest, according to new research suggesting that physical fitness is more important in death risk than even high blood pressure, high cholesterol or smoking.

Niacin Deficiency May Lead to Disease and Cancers in Old Age

Dr Burkle is also interested in the role of the vitamin, niacin, which also plays a role in DNA repair.
He believes that it is possible that the ageing process may be accelerated by a lack of niacin in the poor Western diet.

Anti-Aging Advance

Aging is closely related to the major diseases that kill most people around the world - heart disease and cancer - as well as those that can have severe impacts on quality of life, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

Cutting Calories Shields Brain Cells From Effects Of Aging

While low-calorie diets have been linked to a longer lifespan in both animals and humans, the reason for the association has been unclear. Now researchers have evidence from studies in mice that cutting calories shields brain cells from the decline that comes with aging.

The Ultimate Secret to Long Life

In the 1930's, researchers discovered that they could extend the life of rats by 33% if they limited them to a very low-calorie diet. Not only did the animals live longer, they suffered fewer late-life diseases, appeared more youthful, and their bodies' biological aging processes were slowed. Since that time, scientists have produced similar life-extending results with many other creatures, ranging from fruit flies to fish.

DoctorYourself.com - Longevity

It is just amazing how tough the human body can be, sometimes. Beggars in India were found to have fewer, yes fewer, dental cavities than well-fed persons in most wealthy Western countries. In one study of 160 beggars, carious teeth were noted in only two. The overall health of the beggars was remarkably similar to that of a comparison group of 80 medical students. "Clinically, the physical status of the two groups did not vary much... 94 percent of the beggars were free from symptoms and signs of avitaminosis or hypovitaminosis (vitamin deficiency disease)". (Pathak, C. L. "Nutritional Adaptation to Low Dietary Intakes of Calories, Proteins, Vitamins and Minerals in the Tropics," American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 6, No. 2, March-April, 1958, pp 151-158.)

ANTI-AGEING MEDICINE – You can halt the ageing process

Can we slow down or even halt this process. The answer coming from medical research is a big YES. There are many theories of ageing. One theory highlights the fact that as we age, there is a steady decline in a number of the hormones normally present in the body and which are important to its optimal function.

Antioxidants protection for health and anti-ageing.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that play havoc with our bodies. They are incredibly destructive. Over 100 human illnesses are attributed to tissue damage caused by free radicals. The action of these compounds is believed to be the key to accelerated aging and the onset of cancer, as well as chronic heart disease, among many other illnesses.

Focus on Prevention

In the last decade research has linked oxidative stress to the way that degenerative disease develops in the body. Oxidative stress is damage to our cells and DNA by free radicals, that is electrically charged particles

Preventaging - Presentation

The Top-Ten Anti-Agers

Remember, all good health measures are anti-ageing! Sugar is particularly deadly for brain function and contributes to beta amyloid deposits. Ronald Reagan's notorious sweet tooth may have led to his Alzheimers. Also bad are excess alcohol, tobacco, saturated fats and stress. Take exercise regularly. The following supplements can be considered for a scientifically-based anti-ageing regime.

Top 10 anti-ageing foods

We can fight oxidative stress by eating more antioxidant-rich-foods, ie. those with flavanoids, vitamins C & E and carotenes. If we regularly consume foods from the cabbage family, this can help our liver to process toxins and even reduce the number of free radicals formed.
