Managing Insect and Mite Pests in Vegetable Gardens

Container Vegetable Gardening

Many people who live in an apartment, condominium, or mobile home do not grow a vegetable garden because space is not available for a garden plot. Lack of yard space is no excuse for not gardening, since many kinds of vegetables can be readily grown in containers. In addition to providing five hours or more of full sun, attention must be given to choosing the proper container, using a good soil mix, planting and spacing requirements, fertilizing, watering, and variety selection.

Harvest Waiting Periods for Fruits and Vegetables As gardeners plant their fruits and vegetables, they anxiously look forward to their harvest. For some vegetables, the wait is short. Radishes may be ready to harvest in 30 days. Apple trees, however, may not bear fruit for several years. Some small fruits and tree fruits may flower and produce fruit before the plants are well established. While it may be difficult, it is advisable to remove these flowers and not permit the plants to bear fruit. Removal of the flowers will maximize vegetative growth and increase yields in later years. Vegetables, such as asparagus, also need to be well established before the plants are harvested.

A well tended garden can supply you and your family with a variety of nutritious, healthful vegetables to be enjoyed fresh or preserved for later use. When space is limited, a plentiful supply of such crops as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and okra can be grown on a few properly cared for plants.

Among the many things a vegetable garden may offer toward a satisfying experience are fresh air, exercise, sunshine, knowledge, supplemental income, mental therapy, and fresh food, rich in vitamins and minerals, harvested at the best stage of maturity.

Vegetable Garden Insects Vegetables grown in the southern United States are vulnerable to attack by a variety of insect pests.  Our warm temperatures and long growing season are very favorable for insect as well as plant growth and development.  Because insects have highly developed senses for locating host plants like vegetables, some form of insect control is often necessary to protect plants from severe feeding damage.  The best approach to insect management in the garden is to use a combination of different control methods (insects are less able to adapt to or overcome multiple controls targeted against them).  This multiple strategy approach is called integrated pest management or IPM.

Much of the interest is on reducing or eliminating use of chemical pesticides for controlling insects and diseases. There is less interest in the use of natural and organic fertilizers.
