JT2004 JOL Tournament Homepage

Each player participates in three preliminary games. Each player will have a Game A, Game B and Game C. Each game also has a number after it to distinguish if from other games of that 'letter'. So, for example, Wes has three games as follows:

Games that are finished will have the victory point allocations beside it. This will help us track how many games we are waiting for.

When all games have been closed, we will determine who will be seated at the finalist table.

JT2004 Tournament Policies

Here are the policies for the JT2004 tournament. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Wes at ghost@mnsi.net

First of all, it should be noted that JOL is not a standard format. JOL is play-by-email and thus things like timeouts are a little harder to define. The VEKN tournament format does not always fit like a glove, to say the least. Therefore, we try to follow VEKN rules wherever possible with allowances for the special nature of JOL. Even though this is the second JOL tournament that I've been involved with, we are still ironing out a lot of the policies. You should consider this document a work-in-progress, though the policies herein will apply for the current tournament unless something very drastic happens.

AUTHORITY OF MODERATORS

Over the years, some moderators have gotten the impression that they have absolute authority in the games that they run. To my mind, they have no authority at all. The role of a moderator is to keep a game moving. They have no decision-making authority outside of this realm. If a decision need to be made, consult the following chart:

DECISION-MAKING

If a game requires a decision to be made, first and foremost try to find consensus among the players. This is not as hard as it sounds. The moderator can help in this regard by trying to moderate discussion, although once again this does not mean they have any actual authority.

If a decision needs to be made regarding game/card rules, your first step is to do some research online. A lot of questions are answered by doing Google searches for the card in question. Failing this, contact the head judge Andy Brown or LSJ. Feel free to put the game on hold for a brief time while waiting for a response. This shouldn't take too long as we all know how quick LSJ is at responding. Note that Andy Brown is still the head judge and has ultimate authority to make rulings for this tournament. Decide for yourself whether the question should go to Andy or LSJ.

Andy's email is ajb (a)nospam sanger.ac.uk

If a decision needs to be made w.r.t. resolving a slow or non-responsive player issue, the remaining players in that game should decide what to do. Ideally, all players should decide *when the game starts* how to resolve such issues and then stick to it. The moderator should strive to keep things moving, but let the players as a whole decide what to do. See the section on "Slow and non-responsive players" below for more details.

If there is a question regarding technical problems with Deckserver, first step is to talk to your moderator. If the two of you can't figure it out, contact myself or George Fink at george.fink@sun.com . Since George actually maintains Deckserver, he might be a more logical choice, though I can sometimes help in a pinch.

If there is a question regarding tournament procedure, and you are not sure who to ask, go ahead and ask me at ghost@mnsi.net . I will probably refer you to someone else but I'll at least point you in the right direction.

If you, as a player, feel that a moderator (or player) has over-stepped their authority (or lack thereof), contact me at ghost@mnsi.net . JOL regulars know how much I love people who abuse authority.

SLOW AND NON-RESPONSIVE PLAYERS

After a game email, other players must respond by midnight the following day (in the region of the person who must respond). This means that each person has just over 24 hours to respond to the email.

Allowances might be made for those methuselahs who live in other time zones and for people like myself who work midnight shifts. This should be up to the players of each game, and the decision should be made ahead of time and *by consensus* of all participating players. I urge all players to be relaxed about this unless a player has proven to be a problem.

Note that weekends are already considered time-off for JOL games. No player is required to respond on Saturday or Sunday.

If a player does not respond within the allotted time, the following occurs by default:

If it is *another* Methuselah's turn

  1. Abstain in all referendums.
  2. Not block or react to any actions.
  3. In combat, vampires stay at default range and strike with hands.
  4. Play no Master: Out of Turn cards.
  5. Optional effects in play are assumed to not take effect (eg Ublo-Satha does not prevent damage).

If it is the *slow* Methuselah's turn

  1. Untap all their vampires.
  2. Perform any *mandatory* actions.
  3. Gain/lose any mandatory pool/blood.
  4. Optional effects in play are assumed to not take effect.
  5. In combat, vampires stay at default range and strike with hands.
  6. End their turn.

It should be noted here that missing your turn is a serious thing. It disrupts the game for everyone (except maybe your predator) and generally makes a mess of things. The draconian system I have proposed for this year's tourney is in response to a lot of slooooow players last year, to the point where a lot of people were getting very frustrated. In an ideal world, these new rules would not be necessary.

However, it should also be noted that moderators should be careful about skipping peoples' turns too often. A skipped turn could have serious consequences on the rest of the game. You should skip turns only after *careful* consideration and, as noted, always with the consensus of the other players. Moderators should never take advantage of these rules to put themselves in a better position as a player... obviously.

SLOW AND NON-RESPONSIVE MODERATORS

God forbid.

If one of your moderators is taking a long time updating the game state, this is a problem. If it happens once or twice, no big deal. Most people would probably consider me a fairly reliable moderator and I tend to update the game state when I get to work each night, and again if a turn ends while I am at work (I only do moderator stuff from my work pc).

But repeatedly slow or non-responsive moderators are a problem. We do have backup moderators who can take over if needed.

In general, moderators should strive to update the game state at the *end* of each player's turn. Some moderators prefer to update after a few people have gone. If the table is ok with this, go with it.

However, a player has every right to insist that they have an accurate game state before starting their turn. Send an email to the moderator asking them to please update the state. Repeated problems, players can contact me and I will discuss the problem with that moderator and possibly find a replacement.

PLAYER TIME-OFFS

There will be many times when a player needs to take a day off from JOL for whatever reason. Notice should be given ahead of time to each game that player is in, and preferrably with as much notice as possible. That game must decide by consensus what to do about this.

If the player will be away for only a day, I would urge all players to just relax and enjoy a day off rather than get all upset about it.

If the player needs to take a few days or more off, they should probably find a replacement player for that period. I have a list of players who did not register on time who can take over if needed. Alternatively, you can just ask someone like myself to play your hand for that period, which I am happy to do most of the time (within reason!).

If the player must drop out permanently, please contact me. I will try to find someone to take over their decks for them. Give me a bit of time as this is not always easy to do.

Note that weekends are already considered time-off for JOL games. No player is required to respond on Saturday or Sunday.

DEALMAKING

There is nothing stopping two Methuselahs from making deals in JOL. Furthermore, there is nothing stopping two Methusleahs from keeping their deals a secret from the rest of the table. This adds an interesting element to most JOL games.

And just like real V:tES there is absolutely nothing stopping a Methuselah from breaking their deals. Not me, though. I always keep my word. Uh huh. I swear.

GAME TIME-OUTS

Each game will end four months after the start date for that round. I will send an email a few days before the time-out period, letting you know that you have so long to finish up your games. Games that time-out will grant 1/2 VPs just like a regular VEKN tournament.

When you get the email from me, you are allowed to finish one more round around the table, including the person who is currently active. So, if it's Bleu's turn and he is in the middle of his minion phase when the email is received, he can finish his turn. The next Methuselah may take her turn, etc... until it comes round to Bleu again. Bleu's turn will then be the last turn of the game. At that point, moderators should email me with the final standings for that game, listing all Methuselahs and the number of victory points they had when the game ended.

It should be noted that it is entirely possible that we may need to alter the time-out rules based on what happens during the tournament. These things are difficult to predict. Be that as it may. we will do our best to conform to the above schedule.
