PRINT - Amherstburg 1813 (Reynolds) - lg
A contemporary watercolour attributed to Margaret Reynolds, sister of Robert, Deputy Assistant Commissary General at Fort Malden. The view is from Elliott's Point looking north. In the centre is Fort Malden, to the right is the Navy Yard flanked by two large blockhouses and further right is the town of Amherstburg. In the channel is H.M.S. Queen Charlotte, with H.M.S. General Hunter in the background. H.M.S. Detroit in under construction in the Navy Yard. Soon after this painting was made these Royal Navy vessels were taken in the Battle of Lake Erie. Tradition has it that the figures in the centre foreground are, from left to right, Major-General Proctor, commandant at Fort Malden, Robert Reynolds and the Duff sisters. In the group of natives at the lower right, the figure second from the right is said to be the famous Shawnee Chief Tecumseh. Also of interest in this very detailed sketch are the bateau, left foreground, natives in a canoe, centre foreground and a native encampment on Bois Blanc Island, left centre.
