Welcome to Dr. Barry Whitney's Virtual Study

This website is the web home of Dr. Barry Whitney's "THINKING about GOD" and "PEACE with GOD" Resources.
Dr. Whitney is Professor of Christianity and Religion and Culture at the University of Windsor in Canada. Several thousand students have enrolled in his courses on God and Evil, Justifying Religious Beliefs, God and Atheism, Religion and Culture, Religion and Science, Religion and Literature, and many others, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Dr. Whitney has published important works on various theological themes, focusing especially on God and Evil. He has been Editor-in-Chief of Process Studies, an international academic journal, since 1996, and has taught more than 165 courses on a wide variety of themes and issues in Christian Theology and Philosophy of Religion: faith and reason, justifying religious beliefs, God's existence, miracles, life after death, the problem of evil and suffering, religious experiences, and biblical studies. He has taught courses also which discuss and respond to atheism, secular humanism, scientific and philosophical naturalism, and New Age Spiritualities and cults. Many of these themes and issues are being published in his Podcasts, as time permits.

Dr. Whitney is a recognized authority in Theodicy, "The Problem of God and Evil'. He has written several books and dozens of book chapters, academic articles and reviews, and given many interviews on this important theological (and deeply personal) issue. His book, Theodicy: An Annotated Bibliography on the Problem of God and Evil (Garland Publications, 1993), revised and expanded for a new publisher (Philosophy Documentation Center) in 1998, remains the essential resource for scholars working in the field and has been helpful to many others who seek insight into the problem of God and suffering. Dr. Whitney wrote the "Evil" and "Theodicy" entries in the New Catholic Encyclopedia (Catholic U of America/Gale Group, 2002), the popular book, What Are They Saying About God and Evil? (Paulist Press:1989), currently being revised and expanded for another publisher to give more attention to traditional Christianity and biblical teaching on suffering, and many other publications, including Evil and the Process God (Edwin Mellen Press, 1985) and the opening chapter in The Big Argument (Strand: Australia, 2005 and Msster Books, USA, 2006). Some of his major writings on the problem of evil, other than his own books, are published in academic articles, including The Southern Journal of Philosophy, Studies in Religion (Canada), Philosophy Research Archives: Journal of Philosophical Research, The Personalist Forum, Sophia (Australia), International Journal of Philosophy of Religion, International Philosophical Quarterly, Horizons: Journal of the College Theology Society, etc., and in book chapters, especially God, Literature, and Process Thought (Ashgate: New York, 2002), and Hartshorne, Process Theology and Philosophy (State U of New York, 1989), Non-Violence: Central to Christian Spirituality (Edwin Mellen: 1982), and The Reality of God (Windsor: Canterbury College, 1982), etc. Click here for Testimonials about Dr. Whitney's work
