In memory of Robert and Edna Poulin

Celebration turns to sadness

JOHN HERBERT, Free Press Reporter

2004-10-06 02:27:36

Robert and Edna Poulin would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary today in Ridgetown. Instead, family members are finalizing their funeral arrangements. The Poulins -- Robert, 85 and Edna, 8 * -- were killed Sunday in a two-car crash at Baseline Road and North Street in Dresden.

"They were on a Sunday drive,'' said son Jim Poulin of Toronto, who was in Ridgetown yesterday arranging tomorrow's visitation and Friday's funeral there.

"Details about what happened . . . are pretty sketchy. It was pretty shocking.''

The couple lived their entire married life at 23 Cunningham St. in Ridgetown. Jim Poulin said that when his parents moved there they were the youngest couple. At the time of their deaths, they were the oldest.

"Our parents were great people,'' he said. "One thing I tell everyone -- and they find it hard to believe -- is we kids never heard an angry word between them. I'm sure they did (have angry words), but never in front of us.

"My niece commented yesterday after 59 years of marriage they still held hands and had many endearing qualities. That's the way they were.

"Everyone who we've spoken to had great things to say about them. Some people left here today in tears.''

The Poulins were involved in church activities in Ridgetown for years. He was the churchwarden.

The couple had three children -- Jim; Brian, who lives in London; and Barbara, of Burlington. They had four grandchildren.

They met at an entertainment hot spot in London, England, during the Second World War and married in London in October 1945.

A soldier, Robert Poulin returned to Canada shortly after the war and a few months later, his bride joined him in Ridgetown.

Robert Poulin was born in Winnipeg. His family moved to Detroit and then to the Ridgetown area to farm.

After the war, he worked as a carpenter in Ridgetown and Chatham. Edna worked in retail, but spent most of her life as a stay-at-home mom.

The Poulins were taken to hospital in Wallaceburg after the crash and transferred to hospital in London, where they died. Three people in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and a fourth was taken to hospital in Windsor with non-life threatening injuries. Tomorrow's visitation is at the McKinlay Funeral Home and Friday's funeral at the Church of Advent in Ridgetown.
