Yet, since the 1970s, many contemporary women artists — and some male artists — have mimicked hysteria as an act of resistance to the traditional roles assigned them. Hysteria and the Body focuses on artworks from the 1970s through the 1990s, mainly by women artists, in its investigation of representations of the body, gender, and identity. Including sculpture, video, artist books, printmaking, drawing, photography, and mixed media work, the exhibition seeks to disrupt traditional ways of viewing the figure and our preconceptions of ‘normal’ behaviour. The work of important artists from Canada and around the world is featured in the exhibition, including pieces by Vito Acconci (USA), Cindy Sherman (USA), Mary Kelly (England), Louise Bourgeois (France), Annette Messager (France), Jana Sterbak (Canada), Marina Abramovic (Serbia), and Pipilotti Rist (Switzerland). | Fivefold: MFA Graduate Exhibition, University of Windsor School of Visual Arts | Art Gallery of Windsor, 401 Riverside Drive West | 4/12/2008 | 6/1/2008 | Fivefold: MFA Graduate Exhibition University of Windsor School of Visual Arts April 12 – June 1, 2008 Diverse in their artistic practices, these five University of Windsor MFA students employ a wide range of materials and techniques to assert their interpretations of the world around them, their identities, and the nature of art practice in the 21st century. Brought together by chance, the 2008 MFA class at the School of Visual Arts has created an exhibition that focuses on physical and social geographies, as well as the frontiers of new electronic media. John Ryan Clark uses fundamental, deceptively simple design elements to create sculptures that can grow and change into organic, vital forms, commenting on the ways in which individuals engage with their surroundings. The large-scale photographs of Amy Friend evoke feelings of memory and loss, including views of shifting light reflecting on waves, and ghostly images of translucent vintage clothing. Mahla Ghasempour’s paintings and multimedia works on paper explore her Iranian identity, pushing ideas of history, mapping, calligraphy, and contemporary social issues in new directions. Adam Glover’s shifting, multifaceted views of ordinary objects, captured with technologies such as cell phone cameras, disrupt our perception of space and motion. The monumental canvases of Chris Hanoski emphasize the continuing vitality of Canadian painting and First Nations culture by combining symbolism with electric colour and elements of Op Art patterning. As well, it’s the first time that I’ve shown this particular selection of work together in the same setting. Though the materials, techniques and ideas vary from one object to the next, an interest in the rural and the representation thereof in popular culture and academic discourse provides common ground. Within this, my recent investigations look to a pastoral vernacular of folk art/lore, foundational myths and other backwoods constructs in drawing connections to my own autobiography, having been raised in the foothills of Appalachia, and between the structures of our cultural allegories and the material language of sculpture. www.artcite.ca |

Windsor is a key stop on the national tour of 53 master prints circulated by the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Albrecht Dürer is the most celebrated artist of the Northern Renaissance, a cultural shift that began in the late fifteenth century, primarily in what are now the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. Dürer was born in 1471 in Nuremberg, and achieved great fame as an artist while still in his twenties. The exhibition spans Dürer’s career from the late 1400s through the 1520s. During this time, the invention of the printing press revolutionized not only the dissemination of texts, but also the ways people made and related to works of art. Dürer was among the first and most successful artists to produce woodcuts and engravings on paper. He made prints far more often than he painted. Printmaking was an ideal medium to highlight his mastery of line, keen observation of nature, and his skill at portraiture and landscape. The great availability of his images helped earn him acclaim as the first artistic ‘genius’ outside of Renaissance Italy. Many of the works in the exhibition portray Christian stories or symbols, continuing longstanding European art traditions. Also featured are heraldic and pattern works, as well as mythological subjects. The exhibition includes his most celebrated prints such as Melancholia, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Adam and Eve, and The Knight, Death, and the Devil. This event features an exhibition tour and lecture by curator John Collins of the National Gallery of Canada, and a printmaking demonstration and workshop with local artist Tony Mosna. The first wave of Polish immigration to Windsor began in the first decade of the twentieth century. Immigration exploded at this time due to constant foreign domination of what was to become Poland immediately following the First World War. The industrialization of Windsor further prompted Polish immigration here during the 1920s when Windsor became associated with the automotive industry. A majority of Windsor’s Polish population settled just east of the city’s downtown. Like many ethnic neighbourhoods, the Polish community has ties to the neighbourhood’s parish church, Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church. Surrounding the church are Polish delis, bakeries and restaurants. The development of what has come to be known as Polonia Windsor can be credited to the individuals who worked toward establishing a community through linguistic and cultural preservation. It is drawn almost entirely from the DIA’s collection and is dominated by the prints of John Sloan, George Bellows, Glenn O. Coleman, and Martin Lewis. Their images, which feature people at the circus, the beach, boxing matches, in city parks, on rooftops, reading, walking, dancing, or just relaxing, form a rich reflection of casual times in daily life. Grouped around these scenes of play and leisure are individual images by other artists such as Childe Hassam and Guy Pène du Bois. The early era is represented by several colorful lithographs created for popular magazines by Edward Penfield and William Carqueville and the range of the exhibition is expanded to include works made by artists during the late 1930s who were employed through the Works Progress Administration, a United States federal economic relief program. www.dia.org |

CARFAC Ontario is launching a pilot project focusing on the professional development needs of artists outside major urban areas. These practical workshops will cover important subjects that artists need to understand to manage the business side of their careers. Workshops topics include: legal issues; marketing and promotion; writing grant applications; and financial management. Participants will learn about the business of managing their careers as self-employed artists. The seminars are appropriate for artists at all stages of their careers. All workshops will be offered as teleseminars in order to reach artists in a range of regions around the province at the same time. Upon registration, you will be provided with a toll-free telephone number and a password to access the workshop. You can dial in from any location, and the only equipment you require is a telephone (land line preferred). Supplementary materials such as textbooks and handouts will be provided prior to the workshop. Teleseminars are made possible through the generous support of Torys LLP, a Toronto-based international law firm. Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery. As part owner, I have personally delayed the opening due to my illness. I have been battling a rare form of Leukemia. In recognition of the efforts of Princess Margaret Hospital and the Cancer Society, I have been running an art fundraiser for them. We have sold 7 original paintings so far this year, as well as several prints and Art Cards. As a fellow artist I would like to invite your members to show your paintings in our Gallery. Artcite Inc., 109 University Ave. W. | 5/17/2008 | Artcite is currently accepting submissions for a collaborative photographic installation, "Check Out This Sprawl", to be featured in Artcite's west gallery and presented in conjunction with the Citizens Environment Alliance's annual "Smogfest" events. Artcite's "Check Out This Sprawl" exhibition opens on Friday, May 23, 2008, 7:30 pm (with a free opening reception) and runs through Saturday, June 21, 2008, 5:00 pm.
We are currently seeking photographs that investigate/highlight general issues of "sprawl" in the Windsor-Essex and Detroit areas for inclusion in this special on-site installation. Photographs may address: * community/economic/social impact of big box and suburban development (new employment opportunities or dead-end jobs? Area revitalization or the death-blow to urban-centered business districts?); * encroachment of farmland and green spaces to big box and housing development; * historic buildings lost to new development; * under-utilized and ailing buildings and neighbourhoods; * urban blight; other impact on the environment and/or community, etc. We are also seeking photographs that reflect positive changes and impacts that are taking place, including, but not limited to: revitalized neighbourhoods, buildings, green spaces (guerrilla gardening? return of wildlife to urban centres, i.e., blue herons, peregrine falcons), etc. There are no restrictions on photograph dimensions and ALL "sprawl-related" colour or black & white and digitally printed photos will be included in this collaborative, community-based installation. Photographs will be hung salon-style, first come-first hung. Please submit unframed photographs (or framed, if you prefer) for inclusion by Saturday, May 17, 5:00 pm for the launch of the exhibition. There is no limit on how many photographs each person submits, however, please include an identification label (incl: artists' name, address, tel # and e-mail) on the back of each photograph to guarantee its return. Second Annual Regional Exhibition of Children's Drawings Theme:"Save the Planet" Grand Prize $500 Exhibition GUIDELINES AND REGULATIONS: Who: Kids and teen, ages 5-14 (grade JK - 8). This competition is open to all children that are residents of La Salle, Windsor and Essex County. What:We invite elementary school children to participate in this exhibition with original drawing with the theme "Save the Planet". By using lines, colours, visual symbols and shapes, they should present the world as their own imaginary garden and safe place for future existence. Children could draw pictures of how they view the environment, the problem of polluting and climate change as well as urban and industrial development. Through their artwork, they can develop an increased awareness of those problems; they can suggest an action or send a message to leaders, government officials, individuals, organizations, agencies and corporations to improve the local and global environment. Criteria: Drawings will be judged on the following criteria: 40% - Overall aesthetic appeal; 25% - Appropriate use of contest theme in the drawing; 25% - Creativity and originality; 10% - Quality and clarity of the drawing. When: Deadline for submission is Wednesday May 21, 2008 until 7 pm. Where: Exhibition Hall at the Macedonian Centre "Saint Nicholas", La Salle. Peterborough, Ontario | 6/30/2008 | PETERBOROUGH FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS’ MONUMENT Peterborough, Ontario Deadline: June 30 CALL FOR PUBLIC ART PROPOSALS Project Intent and Overview The City of Peterborough, as represented by the Art Gallery of Peterborough in conjunction with the Peterborough Fire Department, are extending a Call for Public Art Proposals - Fallen Firefighter's Monument relative to a major commission dedicated to Peterborough firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty or due to a work-related disease. Proposals are sought from professional artists, landscape architects and urban designers from across Ontario to submit ideas for the design, fabrication, and installation of a public work of art to be permanently installed on a triangular plot of land in downtown Peterborough near Little Lake. Selection Process The selection of the individual artists or artist groups will be conducted in two Phases. In Phase I, a jury will evaluate proposals and select up to three finalists for Phase II. Key factors in the selection will be the ease in which the monument addresses the theme of "Sacrifice and Gratitude" and communicates a recognizable public identity for the Peterborough Fire Department. These finalists will be asked to submit a scale model, measured drawings, detailed budget, and fabrication-installation timeline; and, upon receipt of these materials, they will be awarded $1,000. The Jury will consider the following criteria when making their decision: Professional qualifications Artistic merit as evidenced by representation of relevant past work Experience with projects of a similar scale and scope Availability to fabricate and install the project during the time period identified Demonstrated ability to recognize, honour and link together significant historical, cultural, and natural resources representative of the site and surrounding community Items to be submitted in order to qualify for Phase I of the Selection Process: 1. Curriculum Vitae. Artists working collaboratively must submit a CV for each member of the collaboration. 2. Two references with current telephone and email contact information. 3. A two-page Letter of Intent outlining your approach to public art, your insight regarding the monument for this project, and other comments that may differentiate you as a candidate for this commission. 4. A CD-ROM with 10 clearly labeled images of related previous work. (maximum pixel dimension 600 x 800, maximum file size 500 KB, j-peg format). Please name each file with nameimagenumber.jpg. Label the CD-ROM with artist's name. 5. An annotated image list that clearly indicates the title, dimensions, materials, date of work, and locations, as well as a budget, and commissioning entity as applicable. 6. Up to 10 conceptual drawings for the Monument, made to scale, which can also be submitted in digital format conforming to the above specifications. 7. Proof of Resident Status in Ontario (i.e. a photocopy of a valid Driver's License or Health card). Commission Contract Parameters The Phase II Finalist artist or artist group will be commissioned to create their proposed Monument with a Total Budget of up to $50,000 (includes all artist fees, material costs, fabrication costs, transportation, and installation expenses). A Contract for the Commission of the Monument to be negotiated between the successful artist or artist group and the City of Peterborough, as represented by the Art Gallery of Peterborough, will outline payment schedules, fabrication-installation timelines, safety and maintenance issues, and pertinent information. A single organization may submit their proposal alone or in collaboration with other arts and cultural organizations. Once organization, however, should be designated as the lead proponent. The proposed events must occur within these time frames: Cultural Olympiad 2009 February 1-March 21, 2009 Cultural Olympiad 2010 January 22-February 28 and/or March 12-21, 2010 Proposed events must take place within the Metro Vancouver and Sea-to-Sky corridor.
