Mennonite young men in the medical core. The entire expense of the hospital work, as well as the forestry work, was covered by the Mennonites. Some 12,000 young men served in the two departments. Concerning the alternative service in Russia, C. Henry Smith writes in his book: "Story of the Mennonites": ‘Mennonite leaders were summoned to Petersburg to arrange for suitable service for their young men within the limits of special privileges they were still enjoying. It was finally agreed that the Mennonites should either, remain in the forestry service or, enter the sanitary department, which was largely devoted to hospital work. About 112,000 young Mennonite men entered theses two departments during the war.’ Smith states that in 1918 with the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk the forestry service came to an end. Smith goes on to say that: ’The other young Mennonites were attached to the sanitary department, forming complete hospital units, including stretcher bearers who gathered the wounded on the battlefield, and transported them to the hospital in Ekaterinoslav and Moscow. These units were reported to be the best in the entire army. Some one hundred and twenty Mennonites lost their lives on the battlefield, or died from disease, while on duty, while on duty during the war. The entire expense incurred by the hospital, as well as that of the forestry work, was covered by the Mennonites without government pay. It was estimated that in the year 1917, the last year of the war, the churches collected over three million rubbles for the support of their young men in these forms of alternative service.
