               and sometimes one of the babies was rocked in

               it.

Household Item: Mangel

Description: Mangel made by Henry B. Wiens (1874-1967) in

 Schönfeld, South Russia.  The two-piece "hand-machine" made of

 carved wood, one is a cylindrical piece, the other rectangular

 with a handle and "Ribbed" edges.  Linen was wrapped around the

 cylindrical piece and the ribbed piece was rolled over linen.

  This was used to soften linen after washing and drying.
