Windsor Light Music Theatre Presents
Thoroughly Modern Millie
Chrysler Theatre 201 Riverside Dr. W 5/9/2008 5/18/2008 Windsor Light Music Theatre
Presents
Thoroughly Modern Millie

Directed by Joe Cardinal
"Thoroughly Modern Millie is based on the 1967 movie of the same name although the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune. They have also recycled even older material including Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite".

Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, thanks to a bunch of out swinging melodies and flashy tap numbers. You will be thoroughly catapulted back into Broadway's golden age with this Tony Award winning show."

English country dance is a lively, elegant dance style with roots going back more than 300 years. The best of the old dances have been preserved and new ones appear regularly.

The dances vary from lively and jaunty to flowing and graceful, with emphasis on patterns of movement rather than on elaborate footwork. The music is hauntingly beautiful; each dance has its own particular melody. It’s great exercise for both your body and your mind.

See it on You Tube, including scenes from Pride and Prejudice.

No experience necessary. All dances are taught and prompted by a caller.

The Tracey Fragments
Art Gallery of Windsor, 401 Riverside Drive W.
5/22/2008 The Tracey Fragments
Canada 2007; Director: Bruce McDonald
Thursday, May 22, 7 pm

Presented almost entirely in split-screen frames, Bruce McDonald’s audacious The Tracey Fragments has received considerable praise for its startling and innovative visual design. But it is far from being merely a technical tour de force. In fact, the film’s exploration and evocation of a teenaged girl’s mindset may represent the best foray into the troubled-teen sub-genre in recent memory.

Traumatized by the disappearance of her younger brother Sonny (Zie Souwand), social outcast Tracey (Ellen Page) leaves her small town for the bright lights of Winnipeg. Alone and broke, she wanders the streets, encountering other, more wizened outsiders and, every once in a while, out of the corner of her eye, catching a glimpse of someone who may be her missing brother.

Tickets: $10 per person (includes Gallery admission)
Available in the Uncommon Market

All screenings in the winter/spring series will be held at the Art Gallery of Windsor and tickets include all-day admission to the gallery. Refreshments and cash bar are available one hour before each screening. Patrons wishing to purchase dinner at Bamboo prior to the screenings may wish to make reservations.

Ida is sweet tempered and ready to begin a new life, Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun, and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene. WINDSOR EXHIBITIONS
Event Place Date End Date Description
Hysteria and the Body Art Gallery of Windsor, 401 Riverside Drive West 3/29/2008 6/15/2008 Hysteria and the Body
Organized by the National Gallery of Canada

March 29 – June 15, 2008

In the late nineteenth century, the burgeoning fields of psychology and psychiatry paid increasing attention to hysteria, a functional disturbance of the nervous system which they deemed a "female malady." Yet, since the 1970s, many contemporary women artists — and some male artists — have mimicked hysteria as an act of resistance to the traditional roles assigned them.

Hysteria and the Body focuses on artworks from the 1970s through the 1990s, mainly by women artists, in its investigation of representations of the body, gender, and identity. Including sculpture, video, artist books, printmaking, drawing, photography, and mixed media work, the exhibition seeks to disrupt traditional ways of viewing the figure and our preconceptions of ‘normal’ behaviour.

The work of important artists from Canada and around the world is featured in the exhibition, including pieces by Vito Acconci (USA), Cindy Sherman (USA), Mary Kelly (England), Louise Bourgeois (France), Annette Messager (France), Jana Sterbak (Canada), Marina Abramovic (Serbia), and Pipilotti Rist (Switzerland). The exhibition displays body-based art to explore both widely-shared themes, for example, aging or motherhood, and more specific issues associated with the self.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, April 18, 7–10 pm and an exhibition tour with curator Josée Drouin-Brisebois of the National Gallery of Canada.

Fivefold: MFA Graduate Exhibition, University of Windsor School of Visual Arts Art Gallery of Windsor, 401 Riverside Drive West 4/12/2008 6/1/2008 Fivefold: MFA Graduate Exhibition
University of Windsor School of Visual Arts

April 12 – June 1, 2008

Diverse in their artistic practices, these five University of Windsor MFA students employ a wide range of materials and techniques to assert their interpretations of the world around them, their identities, and the nature of art practice in the 21st century.

Brought together by chance, the 2008 MFA class at the School of Visual Arts has created an exhibition that focuses on physical and social geographies, as well as the frontiers of new electronic media.

John Ryan Clark uses fundamental, deceptively simple design elements to create sculptures that can grow and change into organic, vital forms, commenting on the ways in which individuals engage with their surroundings. The large-scale photographs of Amy Friend evoke feelings of memory and loss, including views of shifting light reflecting on waves, and ghostly images of translucent vintage clothing. Mahla Ghasempour’s paintings and multimedia works on paper explore her Iranian identity, pushing ideas of history, mapping, calligraphy, and contemporary social issues in new directions. Adam Glover’s shifting, multifaceted views of ordinary objects, captured with technologies such as cell phone cameras, disrupt our perception of space and motion. The monumental canvases of Chris Hanoski emphasize the continuing vitality of Canadian painting and First Nations culture by combining symbolism with electric colour and elements of Op Art patterning.

Join the artists for the opening reception on Friday, April 18, 7–10 pm.
"FOLKLURE" by David Diviney Artcite, 109 University Ave. W., Windsor, ON, N9A 5P4 4/18/2008 5/17/2008 April 18 - May 17, 2008
"FOLKLURE" by David Diviney (Kamloops, BC)

Opening reception : Friday, April 18, 7:30 pm

Nature of Activity: solo show; mixed media sculptural installation

The sculptures included in the exhibition "Folklure" are just a small sample of the work that I’ve produced during the past year or so. As well, it’s the first time that I’ve shown this particular selection of work together in the same setting. Though the materials, techniques and ideas vary from one object to the next, an interest in the rural and the representation thereof in popular culture and academic discourse provides common ground. Within this, my recent investigations look to a pastoral vernacular of folk art/lore, foundational myths and other backwoods constructs in drawing connections to my own autobiography, having been raised in the foothills of Appalachia, and between the structures of our cultural allegories and the material language of sculpture.

The Prints of Albrecht Dürer Art Gallery of Windsor, 401 Riverside Drive West 4/19/2008 6/8/2008 The Prints of Albrecht Dürer
Organized by the National Gallery of Canada

April 19 – June 8, 2008

The Prints of Albrecht Dürer provides a rare opportunity to view the work of one of the world’s most famous and influential artists. Windsor is a key stop on the national tour of 53 master prints circulated by the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

Albrecht Dürer is the most celebrated artist of the Northern Renaissance, a cultural shift that began in the late fifteenth century, primarily in what are now the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. Dürer was born in 1471 in Nuremberg, and achieved great fame as an artist while still in his twenties. The exhibition spans Dürer’s career from the late 1400s through the 1520s. During this time, the invention of the printing press revolutionized not only the dissemination of texts, but also the ways people made and related to works of art. Dürer was among the first and most successful artists to produce woodcuts and engravings on paper. He made prints far more often than he painted. Printmaking was an ideal medium to highlight his mastery of line, keen observation of nature, and his skill at portraiture and landscape. The great availability of his images helped earn him acclaim as the first artistic ‘genius’ outside of Renaissance Italy. Many of the works in the exhibition portray Christian stories or symbols, continuing longstanding European art traditions. Also featured are heraldic and pattern works, as well as mythological subjects. The exhibition includes his most celebrated prints such as Melancholia, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Adam and Eve, and The Knight, Death, and the Devil.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, April 18, 7–10 pm. This event features an exhibition tour and lecture by curator John Collins of the National Gallery of Canada, and a printmaking demonstration and workshop with local artist Tony Mosna.

Thursday April 17, 7:30 pm: Private Preview and Celebration

100 Years of the Polish Community in Windsor Windsor’s Community Museum, 254 Pitt Street West 5/10/2008 12/20/2008 100 Years of the Polish Community in Windsor

Opens Saturday May 10th @ 6:30 pm
R.S.V.P. 519-253-1812
All are welcome

Windsor’s Community Museum, 254 Pitt Street West in downtown Windsor.

The first wave of Polish immigration to Windsor began in the first decade of the twentieth century. Immigration exploded at this time due to constant foreign domination of what was to become Poland immediately following the First World War. The industrialization of Windsor further prompted Polish immigration here during the 1920s when Windsor became associated with the automotive industry.

A majority of Windsor’s Polish population settled just east of the city’s downtown. Like many ethnic neighbourhoods, the Polish community has ties to the neighbourhood’s parish church, Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church. Surrounding the church are Polish delis, bakeries and restaurants.

The development of what has come to be known as Polonia Windsor can be credited to the individuals who worked toward establishing a community through linguistic and cultural preservation.

Continues until December 20th 2008

April 2 - August 3, 2008

This exhibition of approximately 100 works on paper serves as a corollary and thematic complement to Life's Pleasures: The Ashcan Artists' Brush with Leisure, 1895-1925. It is drawn almost entirely from the DIA’s collection and is dominated by the prints of John Sloan, George Bellows, Glenn O. Coleman, and Martin Lewis. Their images, which feature people at the circus, the beach, boxing matches, in city parks, on rooftops, reading, walking, dancing, or just relaxing, form a rich reflection of casual times in daily life. Grouped around these scenes of play and leisure are individual images by other artists such as Childe Hassam and Guy Pène du Bois. The early era is represented by several colorful lithographs created for popular magazines by Edward Penfield and William Carqueville and the range of the exhibition is expanded to include works made by artists during the late 1930s who were employed through the Works Progress Administration, a United States federal economic relief program.

Art fundraiser for Princess Margaret Hospital and the Cancer Society Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery, Harrow, Ontario

Hello to fellow Artists,

My name is Hannah Mitchell. I am an artist who has been fighting Cancer for the last 3 years. My family has opened a new winery on Lake Erie in Harrow Ontario (Essex County) (Southwest corner of County Rd 50 and County Rd 41). Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery.

As part owner, I have personally delayed the opening due to my illness. I have been battling a rare form of Leukemia. In recognition of the efforts of Princess Margaret Hospital and the Cancer Society, I have been running an art fundraiser for them. We have sold 7 original paintings so far this year, as well as several prints and Art Cards.

As a fellow artist I would like to invite your members to show your paintings in our Gallery. Check out our website at www.sprucewoodshores.com or visit us. Our phone number is 519-738-9253 or 866-938-9253. We would subtract a 20% commission (or more if you feel generous) which would be presented to Princess Margaret hospital for research, or the Cancer Society for patient services.

Although we will take the utmost care of your paintings in our possession, insurance against damage or theft is the responsibility of the artist.

Any artist who is interested should contact me...Hannah Mitchell at 519-915-1130 to arrange acceptance of the art work. We are happy to receive work from Artists in our new location (Windsor&Essex County). For those in the London/Kitchener/Waterloo/Toronto area, we would arrange pick-up and delivery of your work, as we periodically visit the Toronto area for medical appointments.

ART IN THE PARK 2008
SAT. JUNE 7 & SUNDAY JUNE 8

"LIVE ART" EXHIBIT TENTS FOR ARTISTS... INVITATION

Hello Artists,

Once again Rotary is planning Art in the Park 2008. Last year we introduced "Live Art" exhibits - Artists came to show how they create their art for a 2 hour time period. And our surveys said "bring this back!"

Would you or your group like to demonstrate this year? Show your talents?

Rotary will provide: * a 10x10’ tent, 1-9 foot table, and 3 chairs, 1 easel and your Gate entry ticket. We welcome you to show visitors how you create – compose – paint – draw- sketch – carve – Show our AIP visitors the amazing creation of your art. (electrics and staging not available)

Times available for 2 "Live Art" tents are:
Saturday: 12:30-2:00 3:00-5:00 (or 6PM closing)
Sunday: 10:00-12:00 12:30-3:00 (or 5PM closing)
Location: Willistead Manor Park, Windsor

We encourage you to promote your art and we ask that you not ‘sell’ your art on site, but make yourself known to our community and art seekers. You can share the tent with an artist friend, all doing your own piece of artwork! Or work on 1 piece of art together..

Please pass this on to an artist you think may wish to participate. Perhaps a student of art you know might wish to show off!

SKETCH ART - INVITATION

Hello Artists,

Rotary is planning Art in the Park 2008. This year we are adding a new opportunity to Artists in our community.

It is "SKETCH ART". Throughout the Willistead Manor Park there will be 4 sketch stations. An easel, 2 chairs, an art board, 23" x 30" sketch paper and admission ticket will be provided. (there is no charge to do this). Bring your own sketch tools (pencils, ink, pastels, chalk, etc.)

These artist stations will be spread throughout the park along the main traffic corridors and shaded. They are portable and can be moved! So if you wish to sketch the scene that is perfect for you, you can do that.. perhaps you and a friend would like to sketch together? That’s fun too.

THEME: Sketch a scene at Art in the Park!

Show off, speak to visitors, and promote your talent. Visitors will watch how you create your picture.

TIMES:
Saturday June 7: 10-12 12-2 2-4 4-6

Call for Photographs
Artcite Inc., 109 University Ave. W.
5/17/2008 Artcite is currently accepting submissions for a collaborative photographic installation, "Check Out This Sprawl", to be featured in Artcite's west gallery and presented in conjunction with the Citizens Environment Alliance's annual "Smogfest" events. Artcite's "Check Out This Sprawl" exhibition opens on Friday, May 23, 2008, 7:30 pm (with a free opening reception) and runs through Saturday, June 21, 2008, 5:00 pm.

We are currently seeking photographs that investigate/highlight general issues of "sprawl" in the Windsor-Essex and Detroit areas for inclusion in this special on-site installation.

Photographs may address:
* community/economic/social impact of big box and suburban development (new employment opportunities or dead-end jobs? Area revitalization or the death-blow to urban-centered business districts?);
* encroachment of farmland and green spaces to big box and housing development;
* historic buildings lost to new development;
* under-utilized and ailing buildings and neighbourhoods;
* urban blight; other impact on the environment and/or community, etc.

We are also seeking photographs that reflect positive changes and impacts that are taking place, including, but not limited to: revitalized neighbourhoods, buildings, green spaces (guerrilla gardening? return of wildlife to urban centres, i.e., blue herons, peregrine falcons), etc.

There are no restrictions on photograph dimensions and ALL "sprawl-related" colour or black & white and digitally printed photos will be included in this collaborative, community-based installation. Photographs will be hung salon-style, first come-first hung. Please submit unframed photographs (or framed, if you prefer) for inclusion by Saturday, May 17, 5:00 pm for the launch of the exhibition.

There is no limit on how many photographs each person submits, however, please include an identification label (incl: artists' name, address, tel # and e-mail) on the back of each photograph to guarantee its return.

We regret that due to the unjuried nature of this exhibit, artist's fees cannot be paid to participants, but project documentation will be available to participants. All works, materials and supplies exhibited during "Check Out This Sprawl" will be insured during the exhibition run only; Artcite Inc. is not responsible for loss or damage to artworks or supplies not picked up following the closing of the exhibition (by June 27, 2008).

CALL FOR PROPOSALS:
VIDEO PROJECTION SERIES
Waterloo, Ontario
6/15/2008 CALL FOR PROPOSALS: VIDEO PROJECTION SERIES

CAFKA is launching an exciting new series of monumental, outdoor, video projections. Through a unique collaboration with Christie Digital Systems, CAFKA is embarking on an ambitious series of video projections which will be sited on public buildings throughout the Region of Waterloo. Our pilot project for this series is scheduled for September, 2008.

We invite proposals for new or existing works suitable for large scale, outdoor, projection. Single-channel, multi-channel, and interactive works will be considered. Because of the scale of the projections & caliber of the equipment, High Definition video (1080p) is preferred. Please note that audio will not be available for most sites.

CAFKA takes art out of the confines of the gallery walls and places it in civic spaces to engage and confront the broader public. We offer the public an opportunity to engage with internationally relevant, ambitious, contemporary art. Artists have the opportunity to create work that needn’t adhere to the rules of presenting art within the gallery/museum system.

Christie Digital is the world’s leading manufacturer of digital video projectors, and is locally based in Kitchener. They have provided projection equipment to organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Toronto International Film Festival. Christie Digital was the lead corporate sponsor of CAFKA.07: Haptic, and we are thrilled to be working with them again.

The first installment of this series will take place throughout the Region of Waterloo in September, 2008. Artist Fees paid: CAD $5,000, which is intended to cover all aspects of production. Installation costs, excluding special requirements for interactive works, needn’t be included in artists’ budgets.

CALL FOR PUBLIC ART PROPOSALS
PETERBOROUGH FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS’ MONUMENT
Peterborough, Ontario
6/30/2008 PETERBOROUGH FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS’ MONUMENT
Peterborough, Ontario
Deadline: June 30

CALL FOR PUBLIC ART PROPOSALS

Project Intent and Overview

The City of Peterborough, as represented by the Art Gallery of Peterborough in conjunction with the Peterborough Fire Department, are extending a Call for Public Art Proposals - Fallen Firefighter's Monument relative to a major commission dedicated to Peterborough firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty or due to a work-related disease. Proposals are sought from professional artists, landscape architects and urban designers from across Ontario to submit ideas for the design, fabrication, and installation of a public work of art to be permanently installed on a triangular plot of land in downtown Peterborough near Little Lake.

Selection Process
The selection of the individual artists or artist groups will be conducted in two Phases. In Phase I, a jury will evaluate proposals and select up to three finalists for Phase II. Key factors in the selection will be the ease in which the monument addresses the theme of "Sacrifice and Gratitude" and communicates a recognizable public identity for the Peterborough Fire Department. These finalists will be asked to submit a scale model, measured drawings, detailed budget, and fabrication-installation timeline; and, upon receipt of these materials, they will be awarded $1,000.

The Jury will consider the following criteria when making their decision:
Professional qualifications
Artistic merit as evidenced by representation of relevant past work
Experience with projects of a similar scale and scope
Availability to fabricate and install the project during the time period identified
Demonstrated ability to recognize, honour and link together significant historical, cultural, and natural resources representative of the site and surrounding community

Items to be submitted in order to qualify for Phase I of the Selection Process:
1. Curriculum Vitae. Artists working collaboratively must submit a CV for each member of the collaboration.
2. Two references with current telephone and email contact information.
3. A two-page Letter of Intent outlining your approach to public art, your insight regarding the monument for this project, and other comments that may differentiate you as a candidate for this commission.
4. A CD-ROM with 10 clearly labeled images of related previous work. (maximum pixel dimension 600 x 800, maximum file size 500 KB, j-peg format). Please name each file with nameimagenumber.jpg. Label the CD-ROM with artist's name.
5. An annotated image list that clearly indicates the title, dimensions, materials, date of work, and locations, as well as a budget, and commissioning entity as applicable.
6. Up to 10 conceptual drawings for the Monument, made to scale, which can also be submitted in digital format conforming to the above specifications.
7. Proof of Resident Status in Ontario (i.e. a photocopy of a valid Driver's License or Health card).

July 14, 2008 - Up to 3 Artists selected for Phase II
Sept 15, 2008 - Deadline for Phase II finalists to submit scale model, measured drawings, detailed budget, and fabrication-installation timeline
Nov 3, 2008 - Phase II Finalist announced.

The Phase II Finalist artist or artist group will be commissioned to create their proposed Monument with a Total Budget of up to $50,000 (includes all artist fees, material costs, fabrication costs, transportation, and installation expenses). A Contract for the Commission of the Monument to be negotiated between the successful artist or artist group and the City of Peterborough, as represented by the Art Gallery of Peterborough, will outline payment schedules, fabrication-installation timelines, safety and maintenance issues, and pertinent information.

Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario
7/1/2008 CALL FOR PROPOSALS: CAFKA.09: VERACITY

veracity (v?-ras'i-te) n. Adherence to the truth; truthfulness. Conformity to fact or truth; accuracy or precision. Something that is true. [Medieval Latin veracitas, from Latin verax, true.

"Never let the facts get in the way of the truth." – Farley Mowat

"Never let the facts get in the way of a good story" – J. Frank Dobie

Our understanding of what is true is continually being revised, whether through scientific discovery or artistic embellishment, or even what’s stated in official press releases. The Kitchener-Waterloo Region, home to CAFKA.09: Veracity, has itself been evolving.

The Region has been the birthplace of many ubiquitous and universal items such as the Ferris wheel*, the soccer ball*, the blue box recycling program, the electric kettle*, and the flip-top cap* used on shampoo bottles. It has consistently been at the forefront of innovation and discovery since its beginnings. From world-renowned quilts to a thriving manufacturing sector to the birthplace of the Blackberry, Kitchener-Waterloo has maintained currency and evolved within the global climate and marketplace. In 2007 we were recognized as the world’s most intelligent community.

In this age of unprecedented global corporate power, conflict, climate change and economic uncertainty, our perception of what manifests truth is shifting with the ways we can see the world around us. Scientific "fact" is questioned for whose interests are being served by the discoveries, and the media and government willingly manipulate the truth. An expanding virtual world and an endless array of digital tools make it increasingly easy for anyone to change fact into fiction and have it reinterpreted as fact.

In this uncertain environment, could it be that our ability to evaluate truth is compromised? How will history be recorded and communicated to future generations? What if the asterisks were missing?

Artistic practice, from realism to minimalism, has an inherently illusory nature; artists frequently use their craft to expose untruths, and just as frequently perpetrate them. For Veracity, CAFKA asks artists to consider the veracity of truth, whether that be through the handling of materials, thematic or conceptual concerns of their practice. Artists may wish to consider the scientific, artistic, political, religious, historical, or experimental implications of an uncertain truth through the veracity of materials and ideas.

We invite proposals for new or existing works that engage with the theme and the public spaces in and around Kitchener City Hall. Works in all media will be considered including sculpture, performance, video, audio, installation, photography, painting, drawing and digital media. Video artists are invited to submit single channel work relating to the theme to be considered for inclusion in a video compilation which be screened during the Forum.

The exhibition will take place in and around Kitchener City Hall in September, 2009. Artist Fees paid for Visual and Media Art Projects: CAD $2,000, which is intended to cover all aspects of production & installation including materials and transportation. Video and one-time Performance fees paid in accordance with CARFAC (Canadian Artists’ Representation/le Front des Artistes Canadiens).

(*) These items were, in fact, not invented in the Kitchener-Waterloo Region.
